Programs
FiftyForward Foster Grandparents
Our organization was selected as an original site for the national Foster Grandparent Program more than 40 years ago and proudly continues to provide this exceptional service to children in Davidson County.
Each year, approximately 80 low-income adults (age 60+) volunteer for one-on-one mentoring and tutoring of 1,000 or more young children who are at risk.
These volunteers are paid a tax-free stipend and work in learning centers four hours a day, Monday-Friday.
FiftyForward Foster Grandparents play an important role in the growth and development of the young children with whom they work. Current FiftyForward Foster Grandparent sites are:
- Adventure Science Center
- Bethlehem Centers (2)
- Clover Bottom Development Center
- Head Start centers (2)
- McNeilly Center
- Smithson Craighead Academy
- Temple Academy
- 15th Avenue Baptist Church
- Napier Elementary
- Maddox Family YMCA
- Nashville Child Center, Inc.
This program is funded primarily through the Corporation for National and Community Service, the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, the State of Tennessee and FiftyForward.
For more information about the FiftyForward Foster Grandparent program, please call 743-3420. Program offices are in the Patricia Hart Building, at 174 Rains Avenue, Nashville.
FiftyForward RSVP
Last year, more than 700 RSVP volunteers, age 55+, invested 40,000 hours of service in Davidson and Williamson counties. They gave their time to 43 area nonprofits and 47 schools who partner with RSVP to address critical community needs focusing on Community and Economic Development, Disaster Recovery/Relief, Education, Environment, Health/Nutrition, Human Needs, Housing, and Public Safety. Volunteers without transportation participate at seven partnering Residential High Rises.
A national Senior Corps project of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the RSVP of Davidson and Williamson County has been directed locally by Senior Citizens, Inc. (now FiftyForward) since 1983. RSVP matches an older adult’s skills, experience and schedule to partnering local organizations’ needs.
The professional experience of working adults is in high demand, and there are a variety of rewarding project-based, time-limited placements available. For example, a volunteer at FiftyForward Madison Station has designed and implemented an invaluable member activity tracking system (MATS) for all FiftyForward centers.
Another service opportunity is the RSVP intergenerational mentoring/tutoring program, Friends Learning in Pairs (FLIP). This year, nearly 200 FLIP volunteers have worked one on one with 850 academically at risk students in grades K-4 with outstanding measurable results – with 79% of students reaching grade-level literacy. Time-limited working adults can also contribute by volunteering from home or the office. For example, RSVP virtual intergenerational volunteer e-mentors are bridging the generation gap between “young” and “old.” These Internet-based service assignments are allowing time for work, family, friends, home, AND volunteering!
The RSVP program offers hundreds of service options to meet your schedule – building on Ralph Waldo Emerson’s statement that “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” Please visit www.volunteerRSVP.com to find out more or call (615) 743-2424.
FiftyForward Living at Home Services
In addition to enriching the lives of very active adults through our centers and programs, FiftyForward provides a spectrum of services to help those age 55+ who are less active and in need of assistance to remain living independently in their homes.
These individuals struggle with day-to-day obstacles that can be difficult to overcome alone; scarce resources, functional limitations and isolation affect many of our frail older friends and relatives in the community. FiftyForward Living at Home Services help these mature adults to live safely, more comfortably and with a higher quality of life. Caring, professional staff provide information, referral, consultation and access to needed services. We also work with and provide support for caregivers.
Living at Home professionals are just one phone call away and are ready to help you put the “living” back in your life.
Below are the services we provide and the contact information. If FiftyForward does not provide the service you or your loved one needs, we will work hard to connect you with other agencies with the appropriate services.
Care Management – Free in-home assessment, identification of needs, location and connection to services. In-home notary services are also available. In Madison, Donelson and Northeast Nashville, call 860-7180. For other areas of Davidson County, call 743-3418 or 743-3416. In Williamson County, call 376-0102.
Victory Over Crime – Free care management, legal system advocacy, homemaker services, counseling support, referral to community services, and volunteer services. The victimization must have occurred within one year of referral. To begin the journey toward being a survivor, call 743-3417.
Respite Caregivers and Senior Companions - Trained volunteers provide free, weekly in-home companionship so that family caregivers can have short periods of time for rest and renewal, and those who live alone can make a friend. Don’t rest until you call 743-3421. (The FiftyForward Senior Companions program is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service.)
Meals on Wheels – Weekday, weekend and holiday (Thanksgiving and Christmas) lunches for homebound individuals who cannot safely prepare nutritious meals. Weekday meals are provided on a sliding fee scale based on income, assets and expenses. To “order in,” call 463-2264.
Adult Day Services - Social interaction, exercise, engaging activities, nutritional meals, transportation and social services provided in a safe, caring environment for individuals who need structure and support due to cognitive or physical issues. Services are offered Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a sliding fee scale based on income. Caregivers receive support and encouragement and are assured that their loved one is comfortable and safe during the day. For more information, call 463-2266.
Senior Support Services – Free in-home counseling services to assist with life transitions, changes and concerns. Professional staff offers a listening ear and suggestions to help you move forward in your life. Community education groups are also available. Call 743-3414 to learn more.
Contracted Services – services include private pay care management and legal appointment as conservator of property or person. Your ability to care for a loved one may be challenging due to distance, work or family obligations or other issues. Let us help you meet your relative’s needs (e.g., select and purchase services, monitor care, be an escort to appointments, make home visits, etc.). For additional details and rates, call 743-3414.
